This IBM Redbook is designed for a one-semester course intended to provide information systems students with the background knowledge and skills necessary to begin using the basic communications facilities of a mainframe-based system. It provides a broad understanding of networking principles and the hardware and software components necessary to allow the mainframe to participate in a high volume data communications network. It is part of a planned series of textbooks designed to introduce students to mainframe concepts and help prepare them for a career in large systems computing.
While many of the networking concepts covered are operating system-independent, the main emphasis is on the z/OS operating system. You are assumed to have successfully completed introductory courses in computer system concepts, including courses in computer organization and architecture, operating systems, data management and data communications, and systems design and analysis.
A basic understanding of z/OS job control, library structure, and system libraries is assumed. It is strongly recommended that you have already completed an introductory course on z/OS, such as one that uses Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics or a comparable text. In some instances, the z/OS Basics course and the course associated with this textbook could be taken together.

S/390 Partners in Development: OS/390 (and z/OS) New Users Cookbook
The IBM S/390 Partners in Development (PID) organization provides several prepackaged S/390 operating systems for its members. This IBM Redbook is about one of these, the OS/390 (or z/OS) Application Development CD-ROM system, commonly known as the AD CD-ROM system, or simply the AD system. (Equivalent systems have been produced for VM/ESA and VSE/ESA, but this IBM Redbook concerns only the OS/390 and z/OS version.) The AD system is a straightforward implementation of OS/390 or z/OS, plus a selection of other products. The CD-ROM portion of the name reflects the fact that these systems are distributed on CD-ROMs.
This document discusses the most recent AD releases, including basic planning for system administration. The bulk of the document consists of "how to" articles that may be useful to new users and owners. It does not attempt to provide comprehensive coverage of any topic, but it does address many common queries and situations encountered by new users. Users completely new to S/390 and OS/390 (or z900 and z/OS) will require initial education before using this document. The PID organization offers periodic classes for users completely new to S/390 and OS/390. Most of the tips and techniques described in this document are not limited to the AD system, and should apply to any smaller OS/390 implementation. However, the specific examples included are based on the AD system. .

TCP/IP Tutorial and Technical Overview, GG24-3376-06
The TCP/IP protocol suite has become the de facto standard for computer communications in today's networked world. The ubiquitous implementation of a specific networking standard has led to an incredible dependence on the applications enabled by it. Today, we use the TCP/IP protocols and the Internet not only for entertainment and information, but to conduct our business by performing transactions, buying and selling products, and delivering services to customers. We are continually extending the set of applications that leverage TCP/IP, thereby driving the need for further infrastructural support.

The Operating Systems Handbook
In 1993, I wrote a book that I wanted to call "Fake Your Way Through Minis and Mainframes," but that McGraw-Hill published as "The Operating Systems Handbook." This crash course in UNIX, OS/400, VMS, MVS, and VM/CMS sold a few thousand copies and went out of print. I recently had them revert the copyright to me, and I created Acrobat files of the book's sections that are available for free for anyone who wants to download them.
Each section covers the following:
  • History.
  • Starting up.
  • Filename rules.
  • The file system.
  • Important commands for dealing with files.
  • On-line help.
  • Using the text editor.
  • Printing.
  • Command files.
  • How to send and receive electronic mail.
  • A sample session.

DB2 UDB for OS/390 Developer's Quick Reference Guide
Written by Gary Joehlin
Someone once said, "Don't memorize it if you can look it up. But, at least know where to look for it." My problem was that I had to look in so many different places for what I felt were things that I needed on a regular basis. I knew what I wanted to do (SQL statement, DB2 utility, DB2 command, etc.) but, didn't know the right syntax all the time. For parameters less frequently used, I could spend more time researching them, but if I knew the basic syntax I probably could have my internal 'memory recall mechanism' triggered with the help of visualizing the keywords. It was not my intent to write a 'how-to' book, nor one of a comprhensive nature. I leave that to others. It was my need to have a quick 'jog' of my memory, by looking at just the basic syntax, that prompted me to write this book. Necessity, being the 'mother of invention' I present this quick reference to those busy and knowledgeable SQL & DB2 users. Best wishes. -Gary Joehlin

DOS/VSE.

DOS/VSE Assembler Language
Written by: Kevin McQuilen and Anne Prince
Published by: Mike Murach & Associates
The first 8 chapters in the book present the least any VSE programmer should know about assembler language.
That's because today, as in the past, all functions on a VSE system eventually get broken down into assembler. So knowing something about assembler is a plus whenever you face a tough debugging problem or have to maintain a program that links to an assembler subprogram or are dealing with systems issues...gardless of what language you're working in.
Once you know the basics, if you want to learn more, you can go on to any of the remaining chapters. They cover advanced subjects like table handling, bit manipulation, translation, macros, floating-point arithmetic, and disk access methods.

Linux on IBM eServer zSeries and S/390: System Management
This IBM Redbook describes system management for Linux on IBM eServer zSeries and S/390. It will help you understand the primary management processes for a set of Linux images on zSeries and S/390, and how to identify appropriate tools for your environment.
First we describe the setup of an S/390 environment with multiple Linux images. We discuss how to install and configure several of the most commonly used Linux distributions and the system management tools that are included with those distributions.
Next we discuss the installation, configuration, and use of open source software for both general and special purpose system management, highlighting the offerings from Tripwire, Moodss, Amanda, OpenLDAP, and System Installation Suite.
We then discuss the proprietary Linux system management solutions provided by IBM Tivoli, BMC, and Computer Associates. For each company's offerings, we present an overview of the products, details for installing and configuring them, and information on how to use the solutions to manage your Linux systems.
Many additional tools are available for Linux system management, both from open source projects and from commercial vendors. Because of the rapid growth in this area, it is impossible to provide comprehensive coverage of all the available products. However, the overview of system management issues for Linux presented in this book, along with details for a broad cross-section of products in the marketplace, is useful even for those considering solutions not specifically covered here.
